One option to travel from Tallinn to Lääne-Viru County is by train. Key stops include Jäneda, Tapa, Kadrina, and Rakvere. For journeys from Tartu to Kadrina and Rakvere, a train transfer is required in Tapa. The travel time varies depending on the stop, ranging from approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes. The Rakvere railway station is located at Jaama pst 8, Rakvere.

Public Transportation in the County

The public transport network in Lääne-Viru County offers various options for travel within cities and rural areas. Regular bus connections ensure convenient and affordable transportation between different destinations while providing an environmentally friendly alternative to personal cars.
Lääne-Viru County operates an electronic bus card-based ticketing system on its regional lines. Tickets can be purchased at the Rakvere bus station or from the bus driver, and funds can be loaded onto the card at self-service kiosks.
As of July 1, 2023, a zone system has been implemented in Lääne-Viru County. Each stop is designated to a specific zone, and the fare changes when crossing zone boundaries. The new ticketing system allows passengers to purchase period tickets, which offer cost savings for regular travelers. Period tickets can be bought online at www.ytkpohja.pilet.ee. When purchasing a period ticket, it’s essential to know the zones of the starting and ending stops.

Public Transportation in Rakvere

Traveling by public transportation in Rakvere requires a fare. Passengers can use a travel card or purchase an hourly or daily ticket from the bus driver for cash. Upon boarding the public transport, all passengers with a travel card must register their journey using the validator. However, those who are entitled to free travel under public transport regulations and companions of individuals with disabilities up to 16 years old or those accompanying individuals with severe disabilities do not need to register their journey.

Electronic travel cards, valid throughout Estonia, can be obtained at R-Kiosks, Omniva post offices, and in Rakvere, at the Selver information desk and the bus station. Personal travel cards can be registered online at pilet.ee with an ID card or purchased at sales points for a service fee.
